Bonus: They don’t include pumpkin spice.
At first glance, one may assume that I anticipate pumpkin spice season more than my own birthday. In fact, I can’t recall the last time the words “pumpkin spiced latte” rolled off my tongue. I drink my coffee black, and I avoid the pumpkin flavored aisle. And for the record, I don’t wear blanket scarves. I do love fall, however, and the nostalgic flavors that come with it. Give me fall cocktails with swirls of cinnamon, cardamom, and apple shrub, and I’ll throw a handful of dead leaves in the air. For those of you who are on my level, I dove into cocktail bar menus from coast to coast and found 6 fall cocktails to prep you for Thanksgiving.
I can walk approximately 50 steps from the CurEat office and be at Hummingbird’s bar, which is a blessing and a curse. I’m such a regular that they serve my to-go food on a nice plate, knowing I’ll promptly return it. For those of you who were sad that Aperol Spritz season came to an end, Hummingbird provided tissues for your tears in the form of Rosé Colored Glasses. It’s Aperol Spritz’s fall sister. Thanks to Hummingbird, our Aperol Spritz well will never freeze over or run dry.
Rosé Colored Glasses
- Cinnamon-infused Aperol
- Grapefruit Rose
- Splash of Soda Water
Thanks to Denver CurEater and food stylist Ellie Nonemacher’s “Best Old Fashioneds” CurEat list, I found Middleman Bar. If I lived in Denver, Middleman would be to me like Person Street Bar in Raleigh: my favorite watering hole. It’s a neighborhood bar that serves classic cocktails and supports local artists and musicians. After taking a look at their menu, I would say that Betelgeuse would be my choice of fall cocktails in Denver. It stood out to me because I immediately thought of Beetlejuice, which oddly was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Middleman owner Jareb Parker said, “It’s funky, cool, floral, with a nice bite.” That’s all you need to tell me, Jareb. I’ll have two.
- Bauer’s Obstler Pear-Apple Brandy
- Heirloom Alchermes Liqueur
- Berentzen Cherry Liqueur
When I read the description of Bibo Ergo Sum’s Raindrops and Roses, I wondered why I started singing The Sound of Music’s “My Favorite Things”. Then I realized the name of Bibo Ergo Sum’s cocktail is the first line of the song. That’s probably why I subconsciously chose to include this in my fall cocktails roundup. Well, that and it also has Teddy Graham Liqueur.
Raindrops and Roses
- Moroccan Bitters
- Lemon Bitters
- Lemon Juice
- Teddy Graham Liqueur
- Africa 03 Coffee Syrup
- Ruby Port
- Egg white
There’s no place like New York City’s Death & Co., located in the East Village. The cocktail bar is an NYC institution. In 2010, it won Best American Cocktail Bar and World’s Best Cocktail Menu at Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards. Tales of the Cocktail is a pretty big deal in the industry. And if you need one more reason to visit Death & Co., the cocktail bar is so good that it decided to open a Denver location. There’s nothing like sharing the spirit. And as far as fall cocktails are concerned, Tim Miner created the Stelvio Pass for Death & Co. in 2019 and it’s great.
- Zacapa Rum
- Simple Syrup
If you’re looking for a best friend in Phoenix, AZ, Blue Hound Kitchen & Cocktails said they are ready to fulfill that role! The restaurant has one of the largest menus of brown spirits in the Valley, so I naturally chose their Blue Hound Signature Old Fashioned. I only drink Old Fashioned cocktails when the weather drops below 60 degrees. For those of you not in Phoenix and want to make this cocktail at home, Blue Hound stirs and serves over a clear cut rock from their partners at Artisan Ice. You can obviously make your own ice.
Blue Hound Signature Old Fashioned
- Del Bac American Malt Whiskey
- Chocolate Bitters
Two things I love in life are Mediterranean food and a good patio, and Momed in Los Angeles has both. You know what else I love? Fall cocktails. Jardesca Red is Sonoma’s version of Aperol, and I’ve already established that I love Aperol. When I read that Momed uses Jardesca Red in their Pisco Punch, I said, “Yes, you are the one.” The deep fall flavors of their Pisco Punch complement the Mediterranean flavors of the restaurant.
